From the Hugo Award–winning and New York Times bestselling author of the Expanse, James S. A. Corey, comes the start of a monumental new space opera series.
HOW HUMANITY CAME TO THE PLANET CALLED ANJIIN IS LOST IN THE FOG OF HISTORY, BUT THAT HISTORY IS ABOUT TO END.
The Carryx—part empire, part hive—has waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy in its conflict with an ancient and deathless enemy.
When they descend on the isolated world of Anjiin, the human population is abased, slaughtered, and put in chains. The best and brightest are abducted, taken to the Carryx world-palace to join prisoners from a thousand other species.
Dafyd Alkhor, assistant to a prestigious scientist, is captured along with his team.
Even he doesn't suspect that his peculiar insight and skills will be the key to seeing past their captors' terrifying agenda.
Swept up in a conflict beyond his control and vaster than his imagination, Dafyd is poised to become humanity's champion—and its betrayer.
This is where his story begins.
"No one builds a universe like James S. A. Corey. The Mercy of Gods is wilder and weirder than you can imagine, and when it ends, all you'll want is ... more."—John Scalzi, New York Times bestselling author

The human-settled planet of Anjiin is seized by the hive species Carryx, and the best and brightest of human society are transported to a planet-sized prison complex where they told to resume their work. This includes Dafyd, a research assistant on an exceptionally skilled team of biologists. The scientists determine to survive prison by learning to understand and manipulate the Carryx. Corey, the writing duo behind "The Expanse" series, launches a new series with a thoughtful look at the psychology of empire and imprisonment. How can one ingratiate oneself into the enemy's ranks when there's no humanity to appeal to? The protagonists' choice to work with their captors for long-term victory is uncomfortable but refreshing, and the active rejection of other captives' fighting is a major plot point. Jefferson Mays, the longtime narrator for "The Expanse" audiobooks, resumes his work with Corey. His measured performance allows listeners to absorb the bleakness of the narrative without being trapped in it. Additionally, his understated voices for human characters allow some of the personality-blurring effects of prison to spill over metanarratively, acting in counterpoint to the Carryx's distinct voices. VERDICT A somber, steady tale of alien empire and resistance from within that sets up a promising trilogy.--Katherine Sleyko

Stellar narrator Jefferson Mays and bestselling author James S.A. Corey are in warp drive as they launch the first book of a planned trilogy set in the far future. This loose reinterpretation of the Book of Daniel begins on a planet settled long ago by humans. When the planet is invaded by a hostile force interested only in utility, selected people are transported to an alien planet. Gradually, they sort themselves out and begin to plot freedom. The dramatic and intellectually profound story incorporates a range of emotion and a full cast of human and nonhuman beings, enabling Mays to demonstrate his prowess. The narration matches the action; conversations are realistic; personalities are vibrant and distinct. Add Mays's crystalline enunciation and agreeable timbre--and this is a winner. A.C.S.
