The year is 2026. China has taken over as the world's largest economy, while the United States, mired in an oil shortage, struggles to adjust to its diminished role. Then, a surprise attack throws the U.S. into a chaos unseen since Pearl Harbor. As the enemy takes control, the survival of the nation will depend upon the most unlikely forces: the Navy's antiquated Ghost Fleet and a cadre of homegrown terrorists. Ghost Fleet is unique in that every piece of technology featured in the novel already exists or is in the works. Peter W. Singer is Senior Fellow and Director of the 21st Century Defense Initiative at the Brookings Institution and a consultant for the US Department of Defense and FBI. August Cole is a journalist and writer specializing in national security issues and is an Adjunct Fellow at the American Security Project.

It requires a talented narrator to handle the many characters involved in a global war in 2026. The multitalented Rich Orlow is up to the task, whether he's portraying an aged Chinese admiral, a female Hawaiian assassin, a Russian spying for the Americans, or an eccentric Aussie billionaire. The titular Ghost Fleet is the last-ditch defense of a diminished U.S., which has been hung out to dry by its allies after a sneak attack, rivaling Pearl Harbor, by Chinese and Russian forces. In a masterful effort, Orlow employs breakneck pacing and a variety of accents to bring to life the multitude of combatants in the worldwide conflict. He skillfully guides listeners through the many twists and turns that drive this riveting production. D.E.M. © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine

Tom Clancy fans will relish Singer and Cole’s first novel, a chilling vision of what might happen in a world war launched by a Chinese sneak attack on America’s eyes and brains in outer space. Singer, a military strategist, and Cole, a former defense-industry analyst for the Wall Street Journal, easily wed their knowledge to a fast-moving plot and characters who make an impression, even the minor characters who appear briefly. After the global economy tanks, urban workers’ riots sweep China, but instead of repressing the workers themselves, the military ousts the Communist leaders, clearing the way for a new government. When the Chinese strike, the Americans fight back. Among the many heroes is Cmdr. James Simmons, who assumes command of the USS Coronado when its captain is killed. Detailed endnotes documenting the real-world technologies and trends behind the book make the fiction even more plausible. Agent: Dan Mandel, Sanford J. Greenburger Associates.
