Confronting the darkness of his past, he finds the light of his future.

After years gadding about Europe, Everett Gerard can no longer avoid his responsibilities. Word has come that a child bearing the unmistakable Gerard stamp has shown up at the family estate—and he realizes it's time to face his demons.

As his carriage nears the gates of home, he fights the urge to flee the memory of the horrible crime he witnessed as a child. Yet the Abbey delivers surprises and delights he never expected.

Miles Kenway was content with his quiet life as the Abbey's bailiff, until the wild child, clearly a bastard son of some Gerard, upends his peace with constant pranks and mischief. And when the master of the house arrives, an unsettling attraction heats Miles's blood.

As they clash over the fate of the ancestral land, they battle a powerful desire to grapple in ways that could disrupt the delicate balance between master and servant. But when the boy's real sire appears, they must unite as only true fathers can to protect the boy whose mischievous charm has captured their hearts.

Devon and Dee (The Gentleman and the Rogue) fill this expertly written gay Victorian romance with emotional tension. Though Everett Gerard knows that the half-starved boy claiming to be Ipsial Gerard is definitely not his son, the family likeness is undeniable, requiring further investigation at the long-avoided ancestral home. Estate manager Miles Kenway is disgusted by his employer’s refusal to take responsibility for the estate and the boy; after he sends Everett an outraged letter, he expects to lose his job. To Miles’s surprise, Everett keeps him on, and the “dissolute bounder” turns out to be a man haunted by his past. As Miles tries to help Everett overcome his fears, he also develops a fatherly interest in “little hellion” Ipsial. Miles’s unwavering strength provides Everett with the emotional support he never had, and their friendship slowly becomes a romance. When Hubert Gerard, Ipsial’s biological father, threatens to expose Everett as a sodomite and claim custody of the boy, Everett must decide what his relationship with Miles is worth. Well paced with realistic characters, this deep story is a must-read for fans of gay historicals.
