"I'm 11-years-old, from the city, and my parents are mean alcoholics. One day the deputy takes me away to live with some distant relatives on their sprawling farm in the country. At the Larsen farm, I meet my Uncle Knute and Aunt Clair and their two children, Glennis and her wild brother Harris. I also meet Louie, the crusty old guy who works as a farmhand and steals all the pancakes at breakfast. Harris introduces me to life on the farm, and it proves to be a rude awakening. From getting up before dawn to be kicked in the groin by a cow, to wrestling in the mud with slimy pigs, this is turning out to be quite the experience." Best-selling author Gary Paulsen is acclaimed for his many novels for young adults. This rollicking tale set just after WWII features action and laughs galore, and is sure to appeal to even the most reluctant readers. "A hearty helping of old-fashioned, rip-roaring entertainment."-Publishers Weekly

Middle school boys will be eager to spend time on the farm with 11-year-old Harris, a foul-mouthed scamp. Paulsen's charming story of post-WWII backwoods adventuring is ably augmented by Steven Boyer, who builds anticipation before each of Harris's escapades. In his warm voice, he keeps listeners wondering if Harris and his city boy cousin will survive the pig attack and their attempts to motorize a bike with a washing machine motor. While Harris's language and free spirit won't appeal to everyone, this is a perfect romp for the imp in all of us. C.A. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine

Paulsen choreographs an antic jig of down-on-the-farm frolics in this warm comedy set a few years after WW II. The 11-year-old narrator (who has spent a good portion of his life being shipped off to various relatives) has never seen anything like the Larson homestead, where he is sent to spend the summer; nor has he witnessed anyone like second cousin Harris, prankster extraordinaire. Initiation to country life includes a swift kick in the head by Vivian the cow, run-ins with an angry rooster and the Larson's spirited pet lynx, as well as assorted dares and humiliations conducted by nine-year-old Harris, who eventually becomes a cherished friend. Days are filled with a mixture of tough work and rough play and sometime during the course of his visit the city boy--parented by a couple of ``puke drunks''--learns the real meaning of ``home.'' On the Larson farm, readers will experience hearts as large as farmers' appetites, humor as broad as the country landscape and adventures as wild as boyhood imaginations. All this adds up to a hearty helping of old-fashioned, rip-roaring entertainment. Ages 12-up.
